Why does a slave’s condition improve under a despotic regime ?

While examining most of the ethnological and historical data on this subject, this article undertakes to illustrate the following law : in a despotic society, or in one of despotic tendency, a slave’s condition tends to improve, at least in one respect : the master no longer has an absolute right over his life or death.
